BSG Love to Glenn

Glenn, the judges were not impressed with your interpretation of Jaclyn's hairstyle, but neither were they impressed with anyone else's. Hence, no winner this week.

Surely your elimination was the biggest surprise of the night.

BSG Interview with Meredith Spiros

Gone but not forgotten, BSG has obtained an interview with Shear Genius stylist Meredith who made her final cut in episode four.

BSG: You mentioned that you teach courses on cutting curly hair. What other courses do you teach? Is it because you secretly have curly hair?

MS: I’ve never been “secret” about having curly hair. I lost hair after my pregnancy, which happens to a lot of women, and it’s too sheer to wear curly right now without clip-on hair extensions. In my classes, I help every hairstylist with their technical, consultation, styling, and finishing skills while also teaching the latest trends from Aveda.

BSG: Do you prefer teaching others or doing hands-on styling?

MS: I prefer hands-on education and working in the salon environment. I don’t believe it’s an “either-or” situation.

Nexxus Insider Tip

Shear Genius 2: Episode 5

“It Looks Like A Helmet”
Insider Tips for Getting the Winning Look

Nexxus® Salon Hair Care, makers of salon-proven and genius approved hair care products, is back as the stylists choice to win on the second season of BRAVO’s reality competition series, “Shear Genius.” Nexxus Editorial Director Roy Teeluck shows that with the right products and a few simple steps anyone can achieve genius, just-from-the-salon-style at home.

Recap of Show
A basket of flip-flops appeared in the Shear Genius house, clueing in stylists that this week’s short cut challenge wouldn’t be at the Nexxus salon. Instead they headed to the ocean, where guest judge Oscar Blandi explained the twist: styling hair after a day at the beach and without the luxury of a wash. To the delight of the stylists, the clients—male surfers—bound up the sand. But the difficulty of the challenge sunk in when they were given their only tools: shears, battery powered clippers and spray bottles. In the end, Oscar declared that Daniel and last week’s winner Glenn had fared the worst. Nicole won for transforming her client while maintaining a distinctively surfer look.

Back at the Nexxus salon, the elimination challenge had contestants using color and creative cutting to transform wigs for women suffering from Alopecia. Tears ensued. After a particularly strenuous styling session, the clients hit the runway. The judges loved Nicole’s bold, blonde spikes and Paulo’s natural-looking, youthful cut. He inched ahead of Nicole for his first win. Winners no longer get immunity, so next week no one is safe. Nekisa, Gail and Charlie rounded out the bottom. Although the judges weren’t impressed with Nekisa’s boxy ‘80s bangs and the fact that Charlie played it too safe, Gail was sent packing. Keeping with the tone of the episode, she received a particularly teary send-off. Even Jaclyn got a little misty-eyed!

This week’s “how to get the look” from Roy

When choosing a wig, make sure you choose a style that fits your personality. It’s important to remember that styling a wig is a “one time cut,” so go for a look that you can wear every day, and can also take from day to night.
  • For additional lift, dampen the wig and add a volumizing root lifter, such as Nexxus Root Exxtend.
  • Divide the wig into sections and blow-dry using a large, round brush to add body and volume.
  • After blow drying, use a styling lotion like Nexxus VersaStyler to separate the layers and emphasize texture.
  • To help set your style and maintain volume, spray entire head with a flexible, bodifying hairspray, such as Nexxus 360° Volume.

Episode Five Recap

Here's a tearful recap of Episode 5 for your viewing enjoyment!

BSG Poetry Contest Winner!

Back in June, after episode 1, we announced a poetry contest in honor of the poetical Oshun here on Blogging Shear Genius. And we finally have chosen a winner!

Congrats, Colin! Please send us your contact info because there's a prize waiting for you!

The oshun was deep,
and that's how I was in
to the episode that
placed him in the bin

Sally was tough
really, what're you gonna do?
inspired by that black blob
of cartoon hair do'

But still, it runs dry
both inspiration and oshun
Gone from his work...
maybe Daniel stole that 'potion'

The judges all balked
the model felt pressed
as she attended that walk
to pass Oshun's test

But pass, he did not
and was sent promptly home
to play with and style
his sole garden gnome.

For who now, after all
would let that salt water treat
their head or their hair,
once he was beat...

"Not I," said his gnome,
and everyone other
"Not I," said we all
and the salty one's mother

So now, the Oshun waves sad
and salty with tears
Having lost the gratest opportunity
of all of his years

The Oshun was deep...
but now it runs shallow
exiled from hair gods,
and their halls, all hallow.

BSG Interview with Parker

BSG readers didn't think Parker deserved to be cut this week, and they also thought he had the winning design in the first week's challenge. He definitely left too early. BSG was able to ask Parker a few questions about the show, life, and hair.

BSG: How does your training as a sculptor help you in your career as a stylist?

Parker: I originally went to The Ringling School of Art and Design for my BFA as a sculptor, before Vidal Sassoon. Being a Formally trained artist has given me a unique perspective of form, line and fluidity. Essentially, there is no difference between cutting hair, and sculpting in any other medium. The same principals of composition and conception apply. It is simply a different material to work in, and as in all mediums, ones technical proficiency and imagination are essential in achieving the extraordinary.

BSG: How did you hear that you were selected for the show?

Parker: Its funny, one of my clients works in the marketing department for the posh Delano hotel on South Beach, FL. When Bravo was scouting locations for their Miami casting for Shear Genius season 2, she met with them regarding a potential casting at the hotel. When casting saw her hair cut, they just had to find out who had done it. They called me up, and the rest you already know.
